In South Africa, a customer contacted MECANMED after a hemodialysis machine showed an elevated sodium reading and high conductivity. Our technical team provided remote support to check the machine's readings and review how the A and B concentrates were prepared.
After further checks and guidance on dialysate preparation, the machine returned to normal operation.
The customer initially reported Error Code 1 and difficulty maintaining the displayed sodium value below 140. Subsequent checks also indicated elevated conductivity, raising concerns about the dialysate concentration and dilution settings.
The customer was also unsure whether the A and B concentrate solutions had been prepared correctly and whether their formulation matched the machine's settings.
MECANMED's technical team checked the machine's operating status and conductivity readings, then reviewed how the customer prepared the A and B concentrates and which dilution settings were being used.
The customer shared photos and videos of the machine's display. Because the machine had just been switched on and the extracorporeal blood tubing had not yet been installed, the engineer explained that the alarm was related to the machine's startup condition at that time. The customer was advised to continue with the standard installation procedure and complete the required checks.
The team also asked the customer to send videos of the A and B concentrates and their connections to the machine.
During a video call, MECANMED's engineer checked the conductivity and temperature readings, pump operation, and solution connections. The team then focused on verifying the conductivity readings and checking how the dialysate concentrates had been prepared.
MECANMED showed the customer how to measure conductivity and record the readings so the engineer could review them.
The engineer reviewed the preparation of the A and B concentrates and checked the machine's dilution settings with the customer.
After the follow-up checks, the customer reported the following results:
Sodium and conductivity: The customer confirmed that both readings had returned to normal.
Correct dialysate preparation: The customer learned how to prepare the A and B concentrates and check the machine's dilution settings.
Stable operation: The machine continued to run normally during a three-hour observation period.
The customer also expressed appreciation for the technical assistance.
Routine checks, correct machine settings, and proper dialysate preparation all play a role in the day-to-day use of hemodialysis equipment.
